What Is Race?
We haven't had much in the way of philosophical content on our new site, mostly because we moved right in the middle of grading season. I don't have the time to type up anything new, but I posted some of what I've been working on with the racial classification issue to my own blog not too long ago. I was going to post it to OrangePhilosophy, too, but I wanted to wait until the move, and then I wanted to wait until the next draft, but since there's been little here I'm going ahead with it anyway. I've developed this a bit further since writing this, but I haven't gotten anything seriously organized enough to post. I'm developing this into one of my area papers right now, so I really am looking for feedback. Also, be aware that most of it was originally written for an undergraduate course and could use some increase in its rigor. Update: Due to circumstances beyond my control, many links on my site got changed. The link in this entry is now correct again.

Hi Jeremy, your link doesn't seem to be working.

My site just got moved to this server so Ektopos won't have to have two versions of MT running. A lot of the links are now dead. I've fixed it.

It still isn't. It must be because of our server switching. I know you can find it on Jeremy's blog 'Parablemania', the link is on the right. Jeremy, I've been outta town, so haven't been able to look at this yet.

have you read any of JLA Garcia's work on the subject? i went to a seminar of his on the meaningfulness of race as a form of 'identity', his answer being that it's not meaningful in that way. interesting and mostly convincing, even if it does seem problematic.

I've heard his name many times, but I don't think I've read anything by him. I'd have to see more details to know what I think about it. I'm not even sure it's the same issue, since he seems to be talking about whether racial concepts provide some sort of meaningfulness to the individual, and I'm trying to figure out what racial terms and categories ultimately refer to, if anything. His conclusion might affect what he would say about this issue, but I'm not sure it has any immediate connection.
